Necessity: The mother of invention

Throughout the history of human civilization, it has been necessity that has always fuelled new & better & more sophisticated inventions, and has instigated some of the best minds of our race to frantically search for alternatives in almost every field. That, I guess, has always been looked up as something to be respected, with the achievers being lauded as successful home-returned knights of the medieval age. But, is that all? Do we keep searching for better methods and hope that Nature will keep plotting for our success?

Guess, the time has come to realize that some moderation is required in every facet of our lives to strike some balance.

The whole world seems to be aware of the imminent energy crisis. Everyone knows about the environmental implications and its ramifications on our day-to-day lives. Media keeps blabbering on the whole issue, enterpreneurs keep making money by fashioning newer and better plans for satisfying this amazing hunger for energy, and intellectuals keep searching for novel sources of energy for future generations. Chinese, Russians, Americans, Indians, Europeans, Arabians, everyone is engaged in the so-called "Energy Diplomacy". But has anyone ever taken enough care to reduce our energy requirements in daily lives? Does anyone care about the amount of electricity we waste each and every day? Does anyone notice the water that goes down the drain and pollutes ground water, and requires additional energy for recycling? Isn't it high time we strike a balance in our lives, rather than running after the Air-Conditioners/Heaters/SUVs/Luxury Cars and an entire gamut of energy-intensive devices?

Am not too convinced about this whole issue & had actually initially opposed the whole philosophy behind this vehemently, when someone had discussed this for the first time. However, now I'm not too sure. Extrapolating this to a person's life, it is similar to the kind of rat-race almost everyone is indulging in nowadays. Fat pay cheques. Running after stock markets. Working for the sake of money, and then burning out and then not realizing what to do off those green notes! Is all this rational?

The words of my Mom echo everytime I think about this. "Beta, try and achieve some balance in your life. This life is not about money only. It is not a race with your peers. It is your own. Enjoy it. Relish it. Live it so that you wouldn't have any regrets about anything."

My philosophy in life is, supposedly, almost opposite to what my Mom has to say. I have always believed in stretching the limits, not setting them. But, after this brief discussion with this friend of mine, I'm not too sure. Maybe, he and my Mom have a point. Yet, I cannot swallow the fact that their way of life actually teaches me to make compromises. It asks me to not be fully committed for all tasks I undertake. Cannot really take that at its face value.

Let's see what life has in store. Maybe, it 'll have its own ways of guiding. As of now, the "fight" continues. Can't really help it :D
