The "Reservation" Animal

Ah! So the reservation animal has once again arrived on the national stage, and is intent on grabbing an even larger share than anytime before in the history of the country. Btw, any of my expressions here are not borne out of any hatred towards the OBCs and the SC/ST people, they are mere meek efforts to respond to the outrageous HRD and reservation policies followed by our HRD ministers from time unknown.

I still cannot understand how can any rational person allow such blasphemous policies to be formulated. I mean, ok, there is a vote bank out there. But still, reserving 50% of seats in all academic institutes for that chunk of the population that does not even constitute 25% of our total population! Does that make sense?

The arguments of meritocracy in professional and academic institutes, to oppose this policy, is too well-known, so I will not delve into that, although I am an ardent supporter of the same.

But why is this being done? Why, time and again, HRD ministers resort to this political gimmick, and play with the futures of lakhs of youths? Why is it that it has been 60 years since independence, and yet the reservations continue to haunt our system? Why is is that the political leaders do not see any advantage in not resorting to, or not opposing such moves and games? If it is the vote banks, then why are they not afraid of the so-called "General" Class?

Well, the reason is simple. The General class is so pseud and has so many other better things to do in life, that they do not have any interests in this "dirty" game of politics. They will call this game dirty and do nothing about it. They will not bother what their political leaders do in their entire tenure, they do not concern themselves with petty matters such as voting and taking an active interest in the running of their country, state, city, locality or whatsoever. Why? Because they have better things to do in life! Only when a bombshell like this, or something like MIG crashes or Kargil happens, do they wake up to the (mis)deeds of their leaders, and start cribbing about what dirty souls these leaders are!

As if, by mere wishing, all the leaders would turn into Barbie Dolls and do whatever they wish! As if, by not voting, and not concerning about anything remotely associated with politics, they will get all the leaders of their choice, who will run the country according to their wishes! What is the use of such fancy crying if you are not even concerned about who runs the system.

Why would political leaders care about the general people, when they know here is a vote bank that will never vote. That here is a set of people who will never ever want to get their hands "dirty" by being in politics. Still if all this does not motivate people to take an active interest in this game, and be a part of it, for their own betterment, I do not know what else can! Maybe today it only concerns the academics of their children. Maybe if tomorrow even the jobs in private sector have reservations, then they will start caring about such things. If not even then, then maybe this is a set of people "jinhonein choodiyaan pehen rakhi hai haathon mein, aur paayalon ne inke pairon ko baandh rakha hai."

Lets hope this bill doesn't get through, and the larger set of our population does not have to learn its lessons the harder way. Jai Hind.

See, as I mentioned somewhere else too, I do not believe in radical immedidate actions such as immolations and assassinations!

This requires a kind of participation by all of us to improvise the situation and salvage our country

Dude, what do you think about it? If it's done, we can actually go to TOI or IE and advertise it. But it'll require huge support and convincing to fellow bloggers, as the number required is 100.

Create a google bomb for hrd ministry that does reservation. Simply add the link: Shameless Pig to your blog (a number of times) and get all your friends to do it. In a weeks time, the first google result for "Shameless Pig" will be the hrd website. Also, do the same for comments in blogs.

First thing I wud like to correct here is that the candidates being talked abt constitute 52% of Indian population. Not that I support reservation or want to correct the figures for the heck of it, just want to make sure that this might not be an effective argument against reservation.

I totally agreee with the apathy shown by our citizens to the so called "dirty" politics. Why has it(politics) been reduced to it present condition? Just coz we guys dont care, dont care to poll, dont care to stop blasphemous act unless it hits us on the head. Why would the politicians care abt sb who, they know, would do nothing but curse the system. It's high time that we understand our responsibility, make the govt feel that we also matter, our misfortune means a lot to them. I request all the Indians to make conscious effort to do anything we can on our part(as small as making our peers aware ofthe consequences). Also please vote and choose leaders. Dont leave it at the behest of the population which can be bought out for polls. If we are not happy with our leaders, we should express it. The best way is through vote.

I agree with whatever u say, and it is my deepest wish that people of this country actually take an active interest in its governance as was envisaged by our founding leaders. But would like to know the source of those statistics. And the breakup, if possible?

The stats are from Monday's TOI, where they have given some details abt Mandal commission. 52% includes only BC categories. If interested please read today's editorial in TOI(Bangalore) to gain some insights. Found it quite knowledgable

The figures abt population of OBC and SC/STs are from 1931 census (wierd, isn't it!!) It is the same stats used by Mandal commision while making their report in 1980.
75 years old data and 25 years old report. The world never changes for old guards of the nation.

Clearly, the census does not have any caste data. And every other data that our govt. uses, is based on the extrapolation of 1931 census, which was the last when such caste based data was collected formally.
And 20% was a rough estimate I used. The aim of my posting was and will always be to motivate people to get actively involved in running of the country or else do not crib.
Here, I would also like to mention that whatever the statistics be, reservations in professional education does not make any sense, because the country's future hinges on it, and it needs to be purely based on merit.

It's about time people started voting and changed the destiny of the nation. That's the only way to fight this menace. Nothing else will do.

Why argue about "general" and "quota"? the ones who're voting are reaping the benefits. The politicians know the General class doesn't vote, so they don't give a damn about what happens to us. It's about time that the "General Class" started acting responsibly and voted.

...and I believe, the Government should do away with all kinds of reservations based on caste etc. It's high time merit became the one and only criterion, as it deserves to be.

Extremist/radical ideas won't help, rational thinking will.

Worse is the fact that these crazy whims are being given the guise of logic using 75 yr old statistics and 30 yr old recommendations...

Its all a farce. The general class which is so sore now as equally responsible as the man who gets himself a dubious OBC certificate and votes for a party just because his son got a tag. Not an education.
